Although, many of us are not accurate to apply the basic principles over it. In order to improve SEO mistake, WordPress needs helping hands in below mentioned two areas:
- Advance SEO Plugin such as Yoast SEO
- An effective application to measure on-site SEO
Either I’d say it’s your objective or responsibility; you need to optimize your site according to search engine result pages (SERPs). The basic SEO guidelines you need to follow, any kind of installed plugins or widgets will not be useful.
Considering the facts, I would like to share with you common WordPress SEO mistakes, also share with you a resolution on it. To start with, we will focus on basic mistakes associated with specific posts or pages. Post that, we will look at the consequences that may occur on web site.
1.Not Optimizing Your Permalink
Permalink has two major benefits:
- First, it gives an indication to your visitors that, what your page is all about.
- Secondly, it also indicating relevancy to the search engines.
Therefore, you must ensure that your permalink structure is defined appropriately in Settings > Permalinks on your backend:
We recommend you to set permalinks as a post name, as highlighted in the above screenshot. You may have a desire to add the date to the permalink, if you want to showcase date wise content on your site (like recent blog/article). However, most of all blog sites are using “post name” which also makes sense.
Once you have applied your permalink structure properly on your site, you can confirm that your each post is well optimized for the particular keywords you are targeting. As an example, check the below-mentioned sample.
You might have also noticed that, I didn’t just copy and paste the entire title. I have just added a few focused keywords from the headline, as mentioned above it is useful for Google when analyzing relevancy of the topic.
2.Not Optimizing Your Post’s SERPs Presentation
Among various reasons, I prefer to use the YOAST SEO plugin is, they provide functionality to optimize per-post/per page option for their users. Please check below-attached screenshot.
If you’re not enhancing your blog post or pages with the above-mentioned information, then you’ll surely lose out a few SEO techniques; which can help you to get rank.
The focus keywords allow you to evaluate and help you to understand exactly, how well you’ve optimized your page/post for the primary keyword.
The SEO Title allows you to write fine-tune and SEO friendly title tags.
In Meta Description, you can write a customized manual description on each post or per page. I believe you might be aware with Meta Description, it’s going to display in SERPs. Writing manual description will help to search engine as well as end-users, it will be easier to understand what’s inside the blog post or page.
We recommend our users to optimize each page and post of your site manually to display genuine content in SERPs.
There are various advantages to interlinking your post on your site. As a result, this may reduce the bounce rate or enhance user engagement and boost interaction. One more aspect, for SEO purposes we need to apply proper interlinking in the website for better results.
In a simple term, Google wishes to connect with relevant pages within your site, which will give depth knowledge and understanding of every topic as a whole site. Interlinking may also increase user time on every page and give them deep insights which will turn into getting higher ranking across all other competitors.
The objective is to connect your one page with another (Interlinking often) and use as much as possible anchor texts. Write precise information for your users, instead of “To learn more, you can click here”, you can write “learn more about poor interlinking”. Link Whisper is one of the best tools for interlinking pages/posts very quickly and easily. You can click here and learn more information about Link Whisper.
4.Poor External linking
According to Google, you can see a good impact in search engine ranking, by regularly linking to relevant and authoritative external links like Wikipedia.
- As I have already mentioned in the above section, relevancy is the most important factor.
- Google likes to see those sites who actually refers to others – Same like medical journal, where people refers to other studies for reference.
In layman words, if your site doesn’t have any external links then Google will assume that your site don’t have any valuable content. So, regularly linking out to your site or blog to relevant authoritative websites; like YOAST SEO has published an article on why outbound links matter.
5.Poor Image Optimization
As you might have seen, the most common SEO gaffe is poor image optimization. Search Engine cannot read image text and at this point, you need to guide search engines with alt and title tags. While you are uploading images over the WordPress platform, it allows you to change Title & Alt Tags.
When we have an SEO debate, we have endless discussion, so rather wasting a time you should focus on both SEO and Usability and implement tags properly on each image.
6.Poor Categorization / Tagging
The website owner should have a proper plan for your web presence, in which you need to define a fixed number of categories (less than 10) and a number of tags (perhaps no more than 50). If a category of tags has only been used a few times only, then it’s really not worthy.
In my blog, I have created only one category and on each post I have included highly effective and relevant tags only. Well, by defining category and number of tags on each post will help search engine to find relevant data for the end-users; and you must remember they are set to be indexed.
7.Poorly Structured Headers
Let me share with you what is HTML headers, it’s just a tag like the h1 tag. Basically, the HTML header provides information to the search engine, what sort of context you have written, and understand the relevancy of your site. Header tags are the main content of your site, and it’s more weighted than then rest of other content.
Remember that, you must include relevant keywords in your headers and structured it properly. Few people tend to use readymade WordPress Theme Based Solution, while you may find issue with some readymade themes wherein the developer has not followed best practice in this regard.
- For home page, the h1 tag indicate the name of your website
- In regards to rest of all other pages, the h1 tag indicate the headline (i.e. of the post/page)
By applying this thumb rule, you have increased the chances to rank your website, and even the rest of all other pages have the best chance too.
